Frequently Asked Questions
Federal law requires that any Urbanized Area with a population over 50,000 people to have a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) that carries out multi-modal transportation planning (like an LRTP). The Grand Island Urbanized Area officially exceeded this population threshold in the 2010 Census. The Grand Island Metropolitan Planning Organization (GIAMPO) is the official MPO that serves as the formal transportation planning body for the Grand Island metropolitan planning area. GIAMPO is the first MPO designated by the State of Nebraska in over three decades.
A long range transportation plan (LRTP) is a strategic document that formalizes the vision for the regional transportation system for the next 25 years. It does this by establishing a series of transportation goals and objectives, as well as identifying transportation projects to be implemented over this timeframe and demonstrating that enough Federal, state, and local funding will be available to implement them.
Anyone who travels through Grand Island by driving, public transit, biking, walking, or rolling.
This plan is crucial for ensuring that our transportation system evolves to meet future demands, supports economic growth, and enhances the quality of life for the Grand Island community. It will help guide decision-making and resource allocation for our community over the long term.
Expected outcomes include recommended strategies and a prioritized project list for improving mobility, reducing congestion, enhancing safety, creating better access, and more.
Safety strategies within the plan could include improvements to road design, enhanced traffic management systems, and improved bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. The plan also addresses safety concerns through community feedback and data analysis.
The overall goal of the 2050 LRTP public engagement effort is to educate the public and stakeholders on the LRTP's purpose and need and gather input to help form the plan.
The GIAMPO encourages community participation through in-person and online public workshops and open house meetings, as well as surveys during the first and second project milestones.
